Joël Curtz
is a filmmaker born in 1985 in Paris.

After completing a scientific baccalaureate, he joins the Ecole Supérieure des Arts-Décoratifs in Strasbourg and works as assistant of the photographer Patrick Bailly Maitre Grand in parallel. He pursues his studies at the University of Arts in Berlin and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna under the tutelage of documentary filmmaker Harun Farocki. Joel exhibits his photographs, videos and installations in Berlin (Galerie Gilla Loercher) and Vienna (Galerie Ulrike Hrobsky).

In pursuit of his post-graduate degree at the Fresnoy studio national des arts contemporains, Joël completes his first documentary film The Bride (La Mariée) on the history of the Italian artist Pippa Bacca. The film is selected for competition at the 25th International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), presented on the RAI television (Italy) and wins several prizes: Prix des amis du Fresnoy, the Special Mention of the First Creation of the Pointdoc Festival and the Audience Award Of the Festival Regards à Longs-Courts 2014.

Joël creates digital installations A Votre Image presented at the Fresnoy in the framework of Panorama 15 and in the Cent-Quatre as part of the Festival Temps d'Images, nominated for the SCAM/Cent-Quatre/Arte Young Talent Award, La Voix des Ombres presented at Lavoir Public in Lyon) and focuses on further documentary film projects.

In 2014, he is Laureate of the Jean-Luc Lagardère Foundation and obtains a scholarship for a documentary film on the socio-political situation and the role of Buddhist monks in Myanmar. Two films emerge from this project: Burma, the power of the monks (Birmanie, le pouvoir des moines), a film made for the Franco-German Channel ARTE with Benoît Grimont (selected for preview at FIGRA 2017) and The Order (L'Ordre) (to be released in 2019).
