Joël Curtz est un cinéaste, né en 1985.

Après un baccalauréat scientifique à Paris, il intègre l’École Supérieure des Arts-Décoratifs de Strasbourg et est en parallèle assistant du photographe Patrick Bailly Maitre Grand. Il poursuit ses études à l’Université des Arts de Berlin puis à l’Académie des Beaux-Arts de Vienne sous la tutelle du cinéaste Harun Farocki. Il expose ses travaux photographiques et vidéos à Berlin (Galerie Gilla Loercher) et à Vienne (Galerie Ulrike Hrobsky).

Il poursuit un post-diplôme au Fresnoy de 2011 à 2013 où il achève son projet de film documentaire La Mariée sur l’histoire de l’artiste italienne Pippa Bacca. Le film est sélectionné en compétition au 25th International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), présenté sur la RAI (Italie) et obtient plusieurs prix : Prix des amis du Fresnoy, la Mention spéciale du jury Première Création du Festival Pointdoc et le Prix du Public du Festival Regards au longs-courts 2014.

Joël réalise des installations numériques (A Votre Image présentée au Fresnoy à Panorama 15 et au Cent-Quatre dans le cadre du Festival Temps d'Images, nominé au Prix Jeune Talent SCAM/Cent-Quatre/Arte), La Voix des Ombres présenté au Lavoir Public à Lyon) puis se consacre par la suite essentiellement à des projets de films.

En 2014, il est Lauréat Documentaire de la Bourse de la Fondation Lagardère, qui donnera naissance au documentaire Birmanie, le pouvoir des moines, un film qu’il co-réalise pour ARTE (sélectionné en avant-première au FIGRA 2017 et nominé au Prix Farel 2018).

Joël passe à la réalisation de films de fictions en 2019 avec le court-métrage Une chance unique (sélectionné en compétition au Festival international de Clermont-Ferrand et au Festival International de Rotterdam) qui obtient le Prix Qualité du CNC. En 2020, il réalise La chaleur du foyer sélectionné au Festival Off-Courts 2021 et diffusé sur OCS et la RTBF.

Parallèlement à la réalisation, Joël travaille comme scénariste et consultant sur des projets de fictions et de documentaires, et il exerce une activité de producteur au Centre Vidéo de Bruxelles (CVB).

Joël Curtz is a filmmaker, born in 1985.

After a scientific baccalaureate in Paris, he entered the École Supérieure des Arts-Décoratifs in Strasbourg and was assistant to the photographer Patrick Bailly Maitre Grand. He continued his studies at the University of the Arts in Berlin and the Academy of Fine Arts
in Vienna under the tutelage of filmmaker Harun Farocki. He has exhibited his photographic and video works in Berlin (Galerie Gilla Loercher) and Vienna (Galerie Ulrike Hrobsky).

From 2011 to 2013, he pursuied post-graduate studies at Le Fresnoy, where he completed his documentary film project The Bride (La Mariée) about the fate of the Italian artist Pippa Bacca. The film was selected in competition at the 25th International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), screened on RAI TV (Italy) and won several awards: Prix des Amis du Fresnoy, the Special Mention of the First Creation jury of the Pointdoc Festival and the Audience Award of the Festival Regards au longs-courts 2014.

Joël creates digital installations like To Your Image (A Votre Image) presented at the Fresnoy as part of Panorama 15 and at
the Cent-Quatre Paris for the Temps d'Images Festival, nominated for the Young Talent Prize SCAM / Cent-Quatre / Arte and Voice of Shadows (La Voix des Ombres) presented at the Lavoir Public in Lyon. He now devotes himself mainly to film projects.

In 2014, he was the Documentary Laureate of the Lagardère Foundation Grant, which gave birth to the documentary Burma, the power of the monks (Birmanie, le pouvoir des moines), a film he co-directed for ARTE (selected as a preview at FIGRA 2017 and nominated for the Farel Prize 2018).

Joël moved on to fictional filmmaking in 2019 with the short film A Unique Opportunity (Une chance unique). The film was selected in competition at the Clermont-Ferrand International Festival and the Rotterdam International Festival, and won the CNC Quality Prize. In 2020, he directed Home is where the heart is (La chaleur du foyer), selected at the Off-Courts Festival Trouville 2021 and screened on OCS & RTBF Channels.

In addition to directing, Joël works as a screenwriter and consultant for fiction and documentary projects, and as a film producer at the Centre Vidéo de Bruxelles (CVB).
